Having increased turnover by 24% in 2016 and with total sales up by over 25% for the first quarter of this financial year (financial year runs from August-July), Newport-based Clarks, leading producer of - and the UK’s bestselling - Maple Syrup and Natural Sweetener brand, is set to celebrate its busiest time of year with a new product launch; introducing the UK’s first red maple syrup.

Tapped during the short red maple harvest in Quebec during early spring, supply of this pure Canadian syrup is limited and unique to the UK.

Bob Clark established Clarks in 2008, having created Clarks original blend in his own kitchen and the company now employs 35 people at its factory on the Queensway Meadow Industrial Estate.

In the first five years of trading, Clarks doubled the maple syrup market in the UK and now supplies all major UK retailers, as well as the wholesale / foodservice sector and currently exports to 14 countries.

Next week will see the company enjoy its busiest day / week of the year as maple syrup sales rocket to meet consumer demand ahead of Shrove Tuesday – and already this year Clarks has produced a million bottles in preparation. In 2016, close to 130,000 bottles of Clarks maple syrup were sold on Pancake Day alone, equating to nearly 26,000 litres.

In the week running up to and including Shrove Tuesday, sales exceeded 390,000 bottles in 2016– a 30% increase from the same period in 2015.

Speaking about the newest addition to the Clarks range, Founder and Managing Director of Clarks, Bob Clark says:

“Our skilled farmers in Canada introduced me to the syrup of the red maple tree. Its flavour is butter-like, richer and more complex – different from the syrup of the sugar maple tree that we are all so familiar with – meaning it lingers on the taste buds.

“The maple syrup market continues to perform extremely well and is currently worth around £17million in the UK.  Clarks remains far and away the leading authority with over 50% of the volume of the total market.
