Welsh Triathlon Launches National Triathlon Performance Centre of Wales [NTPCW]

Welsh Triathlon is proud to announce the launch of the first National Triathlon Performance Centre of Wales (NTPCW). The Performance Centre is a collaborative project between Cardiff Metropolitan University, Cardiff University and Welsh Triathlon, with support from Sport Wales.

The Centre will utilise the world class facilities and sport science support available at both Universities and has been developed to offer athletes the opportunity to train and compete at the highest possible level. In addition to the facilities, South Wales is a perfect environment for triathlon training and competing, with stunning coastline and the challenging Brecon Beacons right on the doorstep.

The Centre is open to all triathletes of appropriate standard; whether they would like to study at either of the Cardiff Universities, are part of the Welsh Pathway (a development scheme for both triathletes and coaches), or compete internationally at an elite level. Several notable athletes have already chosen to base themselves in Cardiff, including:

  • Adam Bowden – ended 2016 ranked 9th in the world, with 11 career top-10 finishes in World Triathlon Series (WTS) events
  • Morgan Davies – represented Wales at Glasgow 2014 CWG, with four GBR Championship representations
  • Zoe Thomas – represented Great Britain at the 2015/2016 U23 European Championships

Luke Watson, recently recruited from Loughborough University, is Head Coach of the new Centre, and said:

“I am honoured to be given the opportunity to lead the Performance Centre. Cardiff is a great city and South Wales is an incredible environment to develop as an athlete. I’m really excited by the backing we have from both Universities and I think we can create something really special here.”
